It has emerged that Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas tried to snap up Jose Mourinho in 2008. The Ligue 1 club’s president revealed the approach to CMJ.

Aulas has long been a fan of the Portuguese boss and is keen for Lyon to win the Champions League at some point – in many ways this makes his sounding out of Mourinho unsurprising.

"I dream to finish my career with a big-name foreign coach", said Aulas. "I tried to get Jose Mourinho before Claude Puel."

The Lyon president went on to say that financially Mourinho would have represented a huge outlay, but he did dangle the carrot of the Real Madrid manager or another big name arrival at some point to the club’s fans.

"We may have to try to have this experience after the [end of] Claude Puel [and his deal at the club]."
