According to Catalan daily Sport, it cost Real Madrid the best part of €16M to part company with club icons Raul and Guti this summer. Both brought to an end long associations with Los Blancos and, it appears, were well-paid to do so.

Sport report that Raul was paid a sum of €11.4M to leave the Bernabeu, while experienced midfielder Guti received €4.5M to ensure there was space in the squad for new arrivals.

Raul headed to Schalke where his club have made a poor start to the new Bundesliga season, and Guti pitched his tent in Istanbul with Besiktas.

It is unlikely the fees paid to both men will matter much to the Real Madrid faithful, who surely recognise the contribution each has made over a long period of time.
