Manchester United are setting off for Spain this morning without star striker Wayne Rooney. The England forward, who has seen his form dip as allegations about his personal life took off, is set to miss the club’s meeting with Valencia in the Champions League due to an ankle injury.

The Red Devils announced the news on their website and also sought to reassure fans by confirming that though Rooney will miss the Valencia match, the injury is not believed to be serious. It is expected therefore that Rooney will target a weekend return against Sunderland in the Premier League.

Rooney has been at the centre of much debate about his form of late, with former England coach Kevin Keegan stating that his weekend display against Bolton Wanderers was one of a striker whose "confidence looks shot."
