Tottenham Hotspur’s Dutch wizard Rafael van der Vaart admitted he has never been involved in a match comparable to last night’s Champions League victory over FC Twente. Van der Vaart had the added incentive of facing his countrymen, but the outcome was something that could not have even been guessed at beforehand.

Spurs eventually won the match 4-1, but it was anything but straightforward in a game which was 0-0 at half time. In the second period, Van der Vaart scored, missed a penalty, was sent off, Roman Pavlyuchenko scored two penalties, sandwiched in between an FC Twente goal and Gareth Bale found the net.

"It was a strange match for me", said Van der Vaart. "I’ve certainly not played in a match like this where I’ve missed a penalty, scored a goal and been sent off. But in the end I’m happy because we’ve won."
