Tom Hicks and George Gillett have lost their battle to keep hold of Liverpool. The duo had the injunction they obtained in Texas lifted when the court resumed at 1pm UK time, and the Liverpool board pressed ahead with their decision to sell the Premier League side to New England Sports Ventures.

The first sign that Hicks and Gillett had given up the fight came with news that the US duo were preparing to sue Liverpool board members Martin Broughton, Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre, the Royal Bank of Scotland and NESV for $1.6 billion in damages. Hicks and Gillett said they had been the victims of an "epic swindle" with the club being sold for far below its true value.

"We’re going to do a lot of listening and our actions will speak for us" said John W Henry when asked how he would convince fans that NESV will be the right owners.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton meanwhile confirmed that he will be staying on in a transitional role while Henry decides how he wants to run the club. Henry also confirmed that he would look at all the options on the table as regards the new stadium or the redevelopment of Anfield.

And his first game will not be the weekend’s Merseyside derby.
"I think it’s better that the first experience of the Liverpool supporters is at home" said Henry.
