Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson believes the Dutch national team doctors were too pessimistic about Dirk Kuyt’s injury and underestimated his body’s healing powers. Kuyt injured himself on international duty in the Amsterdam ArenA and at first their were genuine fears his season might be over, and, if not, the Dutch believed he was looking at a long spell on the sidelines.

"The initial rumours that came over from the Dutch were pessimistic and they thought the recovery period would be long, perhaps months", said Hodgson. "But our doctors and our sports scientists are much more optimistic. I think it should take about a month, or three weeks if we’re lucky."

Hodgson then went on to praise Kuyt’s powers of recovery stating: "He recovers quickly and if there’s one thing we can say, it’s that Dirk is always anxious to get back on the pitch. If he can recover in three weeks, he’ll recover in three weeks."
