Rio Ferdinand has welcomed Wayne Rooney’s dramatic U-turn and decision to remain at Manchester United, arguing that Old Trafford is the best place for the England star. Rooney had said that he wanted to leave United, questioning their ability to continue competing for trophies, but performed a U-turn on Friday, and signed a new five-year deal.

It is a turnaround that has delighted Ferdinand: "Everybody at the club is delighted that Wayne has signed", the defender told MUTV, "it has been an awkward couple of days for all concerned, but the club have done a fantastic job in putting it to bed as quickly as they have."

Ferdinand also believes that Rooney is in the right place to continue his development and that the striker is a Manchester United player through and through.

"I think deep down, Wazza knows he is a Man United player and this is where he is best. We have seen great players leave this club and always talk about regretting it and how they want to be back here."
