El Clasico, the eagerly awaited battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid could well be played on a Monday this year. La Liga’s first showpiece event of the season is scheduled for the weekend of the 27th-28th November, with Sunday 28th being the preferred date. However, the Catalan authorities are reported to be considering shifting the game to Monday evening instead.

The reason for this is that local elections will take place on the Sunday and there are concerns in Barcelona as to whether the local authorities can cope with two large events on the same day. This has led some to call for El Clasico to be pushed back to the Monday night.

Real Madrid would prefer the game be shifted to a Saturday if it is to be moved at all and their calls have been backed by Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes who stated: "To play Barca-Real on a Monday is to take away its taste. Football is for the weekend. As professionals, that is what we prefer."
