Karim Benzema might not have scored for Real Madrid in their win away to Hercules last night, but he did lay on both of Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals and declared, "I’m not dead" after the match.

Benzema has been heavily criticised in Madrid for not just his lack of goals, but also a supposedly low level of effort. Several Spanish papers even dubbed the former Lyon striker "lazy".

Now though, Benzema, coming on as a substitute, impressed Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho by selflessly providing assists in the 3-1 win.

"It’s true that I had a good game, I’m not dead", said Benzema. "I’m only 22 years old and I am here to earn my place."

It also appears the striker is a popular member of the squad, earning pats on the back from a number of team-mates after the 90 minutes.
