Reports from Spain suggest that Liverpool are looking closely at Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente in case Fernando Torres decides to leave the club. Llorente is already an established Spanish international and has been used as an alternative to Torres by coach Vicente del Bosque. Llorente is being tracked by numerous European giants.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are counted as admirers of Llorente, however the duo have so far refused to even consider paying the buy-out clause in the striker’s contract, set at €36M. Given Athletic are not keen to sell their 25-year-old jewel in the crown, it appears clear that any interested party will need to meet Llorente’s buy-out clause.
Llorente’s representatives are believed to favour a move to England for their client according to Marca, as they feel the striker could command higher wages in the Premier League. Liverpool would have to rival Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal for Llorente, in addition to La Liga’s two powerhouses. Indeed, next summer’s transfer market is expected to be all about the highly rated 25-year-old.
