Barcelona are facing the prospect of having to move more quickly than they might otherwise have liked if they wish to snap up Ibrahim Afellay from PSV Eindhoven. The Camp Nou giants, aware Afellay wants to leave Holland, were hoping to wait until next summer, by which time the midfielder would be out of contract, to take him to Barcelona.

However, PSV want to realise some sort of fee for the player and Afellay himself is believed to fancy moving in January. Playing in the second half of the Eredivisie season in front of fans who know he is intending to leave without a fee could prove uncomfortable, and the Holland international would like to embark on his new adventure sooner rather than later.

PSV expect bids to come in for Afellay in January and reports from Spain, in Catalan daily Sport, suggest that both Madrid clubs, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, are seriously considering a move for the 24-year-old. At the Bernabeu, there is the very real possibility Lassana Diarra could be sold in the winter window, leaving a spot in the midfield for Afellay. While at the Vicente Calderon, the Dutchman would add much needed strength to the first eleven.
