AC Milan’s tough-tackling veteran midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has emerged as a serious transfer target for Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala.

Gattuso was recently the subject of interest from Terek Grozny, Dutch coach Ruud Gullit’s new team, who were willing to pay the 33-year-old a significant fee to head east. However, Anzhi Makhachkala, the side that completed a shock deal for Brazilian left back Roberto Carlos just weeks ago, have blown Terek’s offer out of the water.

The Dagestan based club are believed to be ready to present Gattuso with a contract worth some €8M per season, a deal which would represent a valuable last pay day for a midfielder with whom age is catching up.

The Milan star’s attitude towards a switch to Russia is not known, but Anzhi Makhachkala are keen to make an impression on this season’s Russian Premier League and adding the Italian to Roberto Carlos would grab more headlines before a ball has even been kicked.
