Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned that the club cannot keep losing players to injury if they are to succeed in their quest for silverware.
The Gunners went down 2-1 in the Carling Cup final against Birmingham City at Wembley yesterday and Wenger was forced to substitute Robin van Persie as the Dutchman, who scored Arsenal’s solitary goal, picked up a problem with his knee. Combined with injuries last week to Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott, Wenger was left ruing Arsenal’s luck.
"We are in good positions everywhere", said the Frenchman, "but we play so many games and we can’t go on losing players.
"We lost Cesc Fabregas in the week and now Van Persie is not in good shape after this game. It’s a knee problem – we will have to assess it on Monday."
And on the Carling Cup final, Wenger said Arsenal could not be surprised at what Birmingham offered, because the Midlands club played as expected.
"We got what we expected from Birmingham, they are a team who fight very hard and cause a lot of problems from long balls."
