Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that the form of centre back Chris Smalling is a comfort to him as his side travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea tonight. United will be without Rio Ferdinand once again for the crucial clash, but Smalling is filling in adequately.

"We are very pleased with his performances", Ferguson revealed to Inside United magazine. "It’s an outstanding contribution he has made. But, do you know, I expected him to do well. I had no doubts about him."

And Ferguson believes that Smalling is improving all the time and will be able to be relied upon in the United backline for years to come.

"He’s done really well for us and he is improving all the time. He is developing all aspects of his game because he wants to learn and improve. He likes defending, he enjoys it. So he’s a real bonus."

Smalling will have to be at his best this evening when United face a Chelsea side with an embarrassment of riches going forward.
