Dirk Kuyt was understandably delighted to score his first hat-trick for Liverpool yesterday as the Dutchman almost single-handedly sunk Manchester United, with the Reds running out 3-1 winners at Anfield.

Kuyt was deployed up front with Luis Suarez in a return to the role he enjoyed at Feyenoord – indeed, Liverpool had bought Kuyt from the Rotterdam side as a striker.

The forward found the back of the net in the 34th, 39th and 66th minutes, and even a late Javier Hernandez goal in injury time for the visitors could not overshadow the fact it was Kuyt’s day.

"It was an unbelievable day and first of all I have to say it was a great team performance from the lads", Kuyt told the club’s official website.

"To score my first hat-trick for Liverpool against Manchester United, with the third goal in front of the Kop, was a very special moment. I just want to thank my team-mates, especially Luis Suarez, who was brilliant.

"The first goal was unbelievable and Luis showed a bit of magic like he did at West Ham last week when he set up Glen Johnson’s goal. I wanted to let the ball go, but I wasn’t sure it was going in, so I just wanted to make sure, but it was more his goal than mine.

"For the second goal I was just there in the right position and then the third goal was a special moment. Any hat-trick you can score for your club is special, but to score in front of the Kop and celebrate with our fans was brilliant."
