Inter closed the gap on city rivals AC Milan at the top of Serie A to just five points after crushing Genoa 5-2 at the San Siro yesterday.

Genoa sprung into a shock lead just before half time, but after the break the Nerazzurri hit five, with Japan star Yuto Nagatomo’s 84th minute fifth the highlight of the afternoon. Nagatomo had starred at the 2011 Asian Cup, earning a move to Inter, and in so doing became the first ever Japanese player to play for the club.

And Nagatomo had no doubt who was to thank for his goal.

"This is a gift from God", the defender told Gazzetta dello Sport, "because I am a defender and I do not have to score goals, but in training I try and I often fail."

The Japanese star added: "Thanks to all, especially the fans. Tonight I celebrate alone, because my girlfriend is in Japan."

Next up for Inter is a trip to Brescia, while Milan host Bari.
