AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed that Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg asked the Rossoneri about buying Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but the player was not interested in a move.

Zenit were assumed to be close to completing a deal with Genoa for Domenico Criscito, but that move has stalled at the last minute, leaving Luciano Spalletti’s side casting their eye across Serie A for an alternative – and that led them to Milan.

"Zenit asked us about Sokratis, it’s true", said Galliani, "but the player refused the transfer."

The Russian side are now expected to step up their moves to add at least one more quality defender to their squad.
