Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel believes that former manager Rafael Benitez is a good coach who was just unlucky to join Italian giants Inter at the wrong time.

Benitez left Liverpool last summer and quickly signed a contract with reigning Treble winners Inter, who themselves had just lost Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.

For the Spaniard however, his time at the Nerazzurri was plagued by poor results as his designs on changing the club’s playing style and systems were not well received by all in the Inter dressing room. And Skrtel, who worked under Benitez at Anfield, does not believe this makes him a bad coach.

"I think he was just unlucky", Skrtel told Tutto Mercato.

"Why did he go to Inter after a great season when they had won everything? He could not keep his team together after the Club World Cup and then had too many injuries, but I think he’s a great manager."
