Javier Mascherano is believed to have turned down an initial enquiry from Chelsea in order to fight for his place at Barcelona.
The Argentina international joined the Catalan giants last summer from Liverpool, but has struggled to cement a spot in Josep Guardiola’s starting eleven. With Sergio Busquets, Xavi and Andres Iniesta all clearly ahead of Mascherano in the pecking order, it is unlikely the midfielder’s situation will change.
However, the former Liverpool man is thought to have made it clear that he wishes to remain at the Camp Nou and will not consider a return to England.
The 26-year-old remains certain that, given a run in the Barcelona first team, he can quickly prove his value.
