Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal reflected on his side’s exit from the Champions League to holders Inter last night and summed up the problem as simply being too many errors.

The Germans got off to the worst possible start as Samuel Eto’o scored after just three minutes to level the tie up at 1-1 and leave all to play for. Van Gaal’s men responded well though, racing into a 2-1 lead through goals from Mario Gomez (21 minutes) and Thomas Muller (31 minutes) to leave Bayern confident as the half time whistle sounded.

Inter though struck back, with Wesley Sneijder giving the Italians hope just after the hour and then, at the death, Macedonia midfielder Goran Pandev curling in a superb winner. 3-2 meant that with the tie 3-3 on aggregate, Inter progressed on away goals.

"It’s unfortunate because we dominated the match and we were not able to realise our many opportunities", said Van Gaal.

"We failed to kill off the game, and this is the fifth or sixth time this season that this has happened to us. Inter scored three times and each time was the difference between the two teams.

"Maybe we wanted to win too much. What is true is that we made too many mistakes."

For Van Gaal, who will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season, there will be no fairytale ending to his time in charge of Bayern Munich.
