Napoli are believed to have joined the race for Roma defender Philippe Mexes as coach Walter Mazzarri believes the Frenchman could help to shore up the southern Italian side’s backline in next season’s Champions League.

Mexes is proving a popular summer option for a number of clubs with the 28-year-old’s contract coming to an end at the end of the current campaign and the player looking unlikely to sign an extension in Rome.

Napoli will therefore face serious opposition for Mexes’ signature, with AC Milan, Arsenal and Chelsea all thought to be watching developments closely.
