Schalke are keeping an eye on Tottenham Hotspur defender Sebastien Bassong as they bid to boost what has been a leaky defence for next season.

The Bundesliga giants made an appalling start to the campaign, but have since recovered to gain a measure of respectability and hold faint hopes of a Europa League spot. In Europe, Felix Magath’s side are still involved in the Champions League, having put out La Liga club Valencia in the Round of 16.

Bassong joined Spurs in 2009, switching from Newcastle United, and although a defender can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder.

Schalke are expected to test the waters and, should Spurs be open to receiving bids for the 24-year-old, could make their move when the current campaign ends.
