AC Milan and Juventus are taking a close look at Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, but are well aware that they could face opposition from Manchester United if they choose to move for the 28-year-old.

Juventus, fearing that Gianluigi Buffon may yet, despite his assurances, be tempted to leave Turin in the summer, are weighing up possible alternatives – and Stekelenburg’s name is at the top of the list.

Milan themselves have watched the Dutch keeper first hand in this season’s Champions League group stage and Stekelenburg once again proved his worth.

Under contract with Ajax until 2012, the Dutch side could be forced to part with Stekelenburg to avoid running the risk of losing him for free next summer. Such a fact is sure to depress his price, with a fee of about €14M believed to be enough to convince Ajax to consent to his departure.
