Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to his side’s ability to dig out a result as a late Dimitar Berbatov goal beat Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League yesterday.

The game looked to be heading for a draw at Old Trafford until Nani cracked a shot at Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who then failed to keep hold of the ball, allowing Berbatov to open the scoring in the 88th minute. With Arsenal only managing a draw away at lowly West Brom, it meant United extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.

And this left Ferguson, who was watching from the stands as part of his five-match touchline ban, delighted.

"That is what the character of this club is all about", said the Scot.

"No other club in the country has got that. We are fantastic at getting something out of a dead situation."

Ferguson also thought he team’s performance had dipped because of their tough programme which has seen Champions League games against Marseille, combined with trips to Chelsea and Liverpool in recent weeks.

"It has been a hard programme and the lads deserve a lot of praise for that.

"This was not a 100% top performance from us, but we never gave in."
