Reports suggest that Manchester United could be ready to rival Real Madrid for the signature of Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.
It emerged earlier in the week that Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho had instructed his superiors at the Bernabeu to move for the Italian, and an offer of around €25M, thought enough to tempt Roma, was being prepared in the Spanish capital.
This came after Real Madrid concluded that moves for Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas were too difficult to complete.
Now however, United could enter the race, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson keen to inject some fresh legs into what, with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, is a rapidly ageing midfield.
Presuming both sides make offers that Roma accept, the choice will come down to De Rossi himself.
