Jose Mourinho has admitted that he came close to taking over at Paris Saint-Germain when he left Chelsea. The Portuguese eventually opted for Inter, but he could well have ended up in French football, only choosing to head for Italy at the last minute.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Mourinho revealed that the prospect of him joining Paris Saint-Germain was a real one, and when asked about whether it could have happened, he replied: "Yes, yes."
Pressed upon why he did not end up in the dugout at the Parc des Princes, the Portuguese stated that the power of the biggest leagues was too tempting.
"I do not know [why I did not join PSG]. Perhaps because of the feeling that England, Spain and Italy are more powerful championships, and we must enjoy the best years of our careers working where the level is the highest."
Mourinho also explained that he was astounded that Paris Saint-Germain is not a bigger club and it feels wrong that they have missed out on the Champions League so often.
"I already said I do not understand how one of the greatest capitals in the world does not have a club of global dimensions. Paris is unique. When is the last time that Paris played in the Champions League? 2004? It is unthinkable in a city that loves football as much, with so many immigrants, Portuguese and others."
