Switzerland have lost two of their most accomplished performers of recent years with the news that Alexander Frei and Marco Streller have decided to quit international football.

The Basel pair were unhappy with being jeered by home fans and admitted that the abuse contributed to their decision to call it a day.

"I can say with a clear conscience that I’ve always tried to give my best", commented Frei when speaking about his retirement. The 31-year-old striker is Switzerland’s all-time leading scorer, having managed 42 goals in 84 caps.

Streller, still just 29, found the back of the net 12 times in 37 caps.
