Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Wayne Rooney after the striker scored the only goal of the game against Chelsea last night. Rooney struck in the 24th minute after good work from Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick and ensured that United left Stamford Bridge with a one-goal advantage in their Champions League quarter-final.

And Ferguson is sure that Rooney, who looks to be hitting peak form at just the right time, will be crucial to his side’s chances of ending the season with trophies.

"He’s now been more regular with his goalscoring which, in the last part of the season, is going to be important to us"
, said the United boss.

"That was important. We were pleased with that performance."

And Ferguson had every right to be. Against Chelsea, United bossed the game and never really looked in serious danger of leaving London with a defeat. The Scot will now be supremely confident of completing the job at Old Trafford.
