Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of young goalkeeper David de Gea, according to reports from Spain.

United have long been linked with the 20-year-old Spanish shot-stopper, particularly given the impending retirement of Edwin van der Sar from between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Now, Spanish radio station Onda Cero, has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are moving closer towards a final agreement with Atletico, having agreed a fee of €20M with the Madrid-based side.

De Gea would be a fine addition to Ferguson’s goalkeeping options and could be expected to slot in as the side’s number 1. In an Atletico team which often presents more chances to their opponents than would be desired, De Gea has shone. He would also surely welcome a move to United.
