Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has slammed the big spending of the club’s Premier League rivals while defending his own approach to team building.

The Gunners look set to end this season without a trophy yet again and could well finish third in the Premier League, with Chelsea powering past them into second yesterday following the Blues’ win over West Ham.

But Wenger is not concerned and will stick to his own philosophy.

"We live in a world where you’re put down as rubbish if you’re second. Even if the difference is minimal with the eventual winner.

"In a world where all teams are bankrupt, the man who spends nothing is called an idiot. Our squad is on average 23 years old. We chose to develop our own players, because players like Cristiano Ronaldo are not feasible. Our philosophy is to build our own team."

Wenger takes his side to Bolton Wanderers later today, with Owen Coyle’s side still smarting from the 5-0 thrashing they received at the hands of Stoke City in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend.
