Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has heaped praise on his players after their 5-0 demolition of Birmingham City at Anfield yesterday. The Reds destroyed Alex McLeish’s team with three goals from Maxi Rodriguez, one from Dirk Kuyt and another from late substitute Joe Cole. It all added up to a 5-0 romp which again raised the prospect – albeit a slim one – of catching Tottenham Hotspur in fifth.

"I think we were deserved winners and we played some fantastic football and we had a good day which makes it very enjoyable for us", explained Dalglish.

"Getting a goal early doors set us on our way and then they started to put us under a bit of pressure, although Pepe [Reina] wasn’t overworked.

"We then got the second goal but the third was the most important one because at 2-0 it’s always a bit iffy. To their credit the boys continued to play some good football in the second half and they were determined to put on just as good a show as they did in the first half."

And Dalglish praised hat-trick hero Maxi, who took advantage of Andy Carroll’s absence to get amongst the goals.

"Maxi isn’t a direct replacement for Andy Carroll, but he has scored more goals than him on just the one performance", joked Dalglish.

"Maxi hasn’t played for a few weeks, but he came in today and did a fantastic job for us."

Liverpool sit sixth, just three points behind Tottenham Hotspur, with four games left to play. Spurs however have a game in hand.
