Lionel Messi has become the first player to score 50 goals in a Spanish season after netting against Osasuna last night. Messi’s goal after 87 minutes was the Blaugrana’s second of the game after David Villa struck in the first half, handing Josep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 win.

And for Messi, the goal was his 50th of the season, a truly amazing feat.

The previous best had been Hungarian Ferenc Puskas with Real Madrid, whose total of 49 goals Messi had equalled with his goal in the 1-1 La Liga draw at the Bernabeu the previous weekend.

Messi will now head into this week’s Champions League Clasico against Real Madrid in good heart and few would bet against the Argentine adding to his 50-goal haul before the season is out.
