Sir Alex Ferguson has declared Edwin van der Sar one of the best goalkeepers in the game today and hopes that he can adequately replace the Dutchman at the end of the season.

Van der Sar is hanging up his gloves when the current campaign ends and this has presented Manchester United with large shoes to fill, something Ferguson is all too aware of. However, at the present time the Scot continues to enjoy Van der Sar’s displays.

"Edwin van der Sar is one of the best and I hope it’s not impossible to replace him", said Ferguson.

"We’re now in a similar situation to when Peter Schmeichel left.

"We should have signed Edwin then [in 1999]. I had the opportunity, but things conspired against us at the time and we made the wrong decision. But he’s been unbelievable since we signed him [in 2005]."
