Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he is desperate to win the club another Champions League so they can sit a little closer to rivals Liverpool in the European Cup stakes.
United look set to overtake Liverpool’s record of 18 top flight domestic titles this season, but with three European Cups they still lag behind the Anfield side’s five. Ferguson also looks on at clubs like Ajax, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, believing that United should be at the level of success in Europe of these giants of the game.
"Our squad contains ample European experience", said Ferguson, also admitting that he has been "historically concerned", about the side’s European run.
"You will soon get jealous when you look at the achievements of the European elite. We want to be on a par with clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Liverpool."
United have the opportunity to take another step towards doing just that when they face Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash this evening in Germany.
