Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised his side for their comfortable 2-0 win over Schalke last night, while also pondering the fact that Ryan Giggs continues to perform at his peak despite being 37 years old.
The first leg of the Champions League semi-final in Germany was expected to be a tight affair, but United bossed the encounter from the off, completely dominating Schalke, with the Germans relying exclusively on superb goalkeeping from Manuel Neuer. Indeed, United had to wait until half way through the second half to open the scoring due to Neuer’s heroics.
Giggs put United 1-0 ahead after 67 minutes before Wayne Rooney added a second two minutes later. And at 2-0 United look to already have one foot in the final at Wembley.
"Overall I was delighted", said Ferguson.
"It was a top performance. We have had some fantastic performances in Europe during my time and this was right up there.
"The concentration issue is important away from home. It is a different tempo at times and requires really good concentration. Credit to the players, they have shown that throughout the campaign."
And Ferguson took time out to lavish Ryan Giggs with praise, stating he could almost not believe the Welshman is 37.
"It is strange because Ryan’s peak years seem to have lasted so long", said the United boss.
"You would think, at 37, he would be showing signs of waning, but I don’t see any evidence of that."
