Diego Maradona has refused to be drawn into a debate over whether Lionel Messi has reached his level as a footballer, but did say that he enjoyed his countryman’s goal against Barcelona in the 2-0 Champions League semi-final first leg win last week.

Messi dribbled past four Los Blancos players with ease before slotting home in what was, once again, another display of his extraordinary ability and instantly brought back memories of the kinds of runs Maradona made in his prime. It is little surprise comparisons are regularly drawn between the two, despite Messi’s failure to equal Maradona on the international stage so far.

"I did not scream, but it was a perfect goal", said Maradona.

The former Argentina coach would not be drawn into comparisons however, only stating that: "My career is behind me, Messi is currently building his.

"At the end, history will decide who is the best out of Maradona or Messi. Some will like one more than the other, but today we cannot compare Maradona or Messi. We are two Argentines who have been successful in Europe."
