Ajax are hoping to jump ahead of their rivals in the chase for AZ striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson by making their Eredivisie rivals a quick offer. The 21-year-old is attracting attention from Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, but the Amsterdam side are confident of beating off opposition.
Sigthorsson is expected to leave AZ if an acceptable offer arrives and Ajax’s bid is some €2M. AZ are thought to want at least twice that amount, but crucially the talking between the clubs has begun, talks Ajax hope will lead to a deal before their rivals can pounce.
An Iceland international, Sigthorsson has stood out in the current Eredivisie campaign, again getting on the scoresheet at the weekend, with a brace in AZ’s 5-1 demolition of De Graafschaap – it was a game at which Dortmund’s scouts were present.
Earlier this year Sigthorsson became only the second foreign player – after Alfonso Alves – to score over four goals in an Eredivisie match as he notched five against lowly VVV-Venlo.
