Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is confident his side can win the Champions League after booking their spot in the final at Wembley last night.

United thrashed Schalke 4-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford to complete a 6-1 aggregate victory over the German side, and this after Ferguson made nine changes from the team which played the first leg in Gelsenkirchen.

Now United will meet Barcelona at Wembley on 28th May in what will be Ferguson’s third Champions League final. The Scotsman’s record is good, triumphing in 1999 and 2008 against Bayern Munich and Chelsea respectively, and only losing in 2009 to, ironically, Barcelona.

But Ferguson believes his side will be ready for the Catalans and are now regularly punching their weight in Europe.

"It’s fantastic for the club", said Ferguson.

"I’ve said it many times, we should have done better in Europe over the years. I think we’re getting closer to that. I think this team can win the cup. I think it’s a team full of great desire and determination. These qualities, allied to their ability, will help them at Wembley."
