Real Madrid are preparing to inform Manchester City that they will not be taking up their option to keep Emmanuel Adebayor for the long term. The Togo striker is on loan at the Bernabeu until the end of the season and Real Madrid would have been able to turn that into a permanent deal by paying City €16M.

Yet despite Adebayor impressing on occasion and adding a physical dimension to Los Blancos’ frontline, Real have opted against signing the former Arsenal striker permanently.

Adebayor’s arrival in the January transfer window was the result of a compromise struck between coach Jose Mourinho and the Real Madrid hierarchy. With Gonzalo Higuain sidelined through injury at Christmas, the Portuguese coach wanted to splash out on another striker. President Florentino Perez however was only prepared to authorise a short-term loan, and a late move for Adebayor was the result.

There will be other sides interested in the striker though and he still looks unlikely to begin next season at Eastlands. In recent days it has been revealed that Turkish giants Fenerbahce are lining up a move for the player and Adebayor will not be short of options this summer.
