Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli has held midfielder Jay Spearing up as an example of the club’s excellent academy. The Reds’ academy was overhauled by previous manager Rafael Benitez and 22-year-old Spearing is proof of the talent finally emerging.

The young midfielder put pen to paper on a new contract this week after starring under Kenny Dalglish, being given a starting opportunity due to Steven Gerrard’s injury. And Comolli believes this is proof that youngsters will be given a chance at Anfield.

"The fact that Jay has been given a new contract shows that if you do well then you will get chances to play and get another contract.

"It’s not that if you come from other clubs you are more highly regarded. To me it is the same. It’s fantastic for the identity of the club to have so many local players."

And Comolli is hopeful that young defenders Jack Robinson and John Flanagan can go on to enjoy a similar amount of game time.

"Jay has had a lot of games of late and hopefully John Flanagan and Jack Robinson can now do the same."
