Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed his side’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford yesterday, a result which puts his side on the brink of their 19th top flight title. But while Ferguson was delighted with his players’ display, he also felt they could well and truly have taken Chelsea apart.
United took the lead after just 36 seconds when Javier Hernandez found the back of the net. And when Nemanja Vidic headed home just 22 minutes later, United were well and truly in control.
Going in at 2-0 up at half time, Ferguson could have been forgiven for feeling the game was in the bag, but a Frank Lampard strike after 68 minutes left the door open for the Blues and there were some nervy moments ahead. United held on though and Ferguson was happy.
"We do it all the time, take it to the very wire", bemoaned Ferguson, adding: "We could have scored six in the second half!"
But the United boss still felt his side were exceptional and praised their display.
"We had lots of chances but we expected a tough game and got a tough game. I thought we were brilliant and it was a fantastic start. Petr Cech made two fantastic saves but it was a good team performance. When we gave the ball away for their goal, understandably it was a bit nervous, but the fans helped us a lot."
With just two games left in the Premier League and United six points ahead of Chelsea, Ferguson’s side look to have the title in the bag.
