Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has hailed the club’s 5-2 win at Fulham last night, a result which gives the Reds an excellent opportunity of finishing fifth and qualifying for the Europa League. In fact, the Anfield side’s recent form has been so good that even overhauling Manchester City and taking fourth is now not mathematically impossible.
Dalglish’s side had the perfect start, with Maxi Rodriguez striking twice, first after just one minute and then again after seven. When Dirk Kuyt added a third with only 16 minutes on the clock, the game already looked dead and buried. However, Moussa Dembele pulled one back for the hosts ten minutes into the second half to give them a glimmer of hope.
But then Maxi and Luis Suarez found the net again, making it 5-1. Only a late Steve Sidwell strike rescued a little pride for Mark Hughes’ side.
"It was a fantastic result for us, a fantastic performance and a win we thoroughly deserved", said Dalglish post-match.
"Mark Hughes has done a great job here with Fulham. They’ve got a great record here this year and when you come to Craven Cottage you know it’s going to be a really difficult game.
"To score five goals was beyond our wildest expectations, but we got the five goals because we played some fantastic football, we passed to each other and we worked hard when we never had the ball."
Following the win, which puts Liverpool back in fifth, all eyes will now switch to the crucial fixture between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at Eastlands tonight.
