Russian side Spartak Moscow have cast their eyes to Spain’s La Liga in their search for a new manager. General manager Valery Karpin, who had also been serving as coach, decided to resign last month, but has still been holding the fort until a successor can be found.
And Spartak’s hunt has taken them to Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
The 46-year-old is expected to leave Atletico at the end of the season and will be available for a new challenge. Having impressed with his work at Valencia before joining Portuguese giants Benfica and then switching to Madrid, Sanchez Flores would be something of a coup for Spartak.
Spartak have been forced to turn their attention to Sanchez Flores after the club failed to agree a deal with first choice Claudio Ranieri. The Italian was sounded out about moving to Russia, but a deal failed to materialise.
Sanchez Flores’ attitude towards joining Spartak is unknown, but the Spaniard is likely to be well compensated for his troubles if he does head to Moscow.
