Manchester United are closing on signing a new goalkeeper to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar, according to the club’s chief executive David Gill.

Red Devils’ boss Sir Alex Ferguson is known to want to bring in a world-class keeper to step into the Dutchman’s shoes when he hangs up his gloves at the end of the season and is determined not to undergo years of searching as ensued when Peter Schmeichel moved on from Old Trafford in 1999.

United have been linked with Manuel Neuer – though the Schalke man is on the verge of signing for Bayern Munich -, Atletico Madrid shot-stopper David de Gea and Ajax number 1 Maarten Stekelenburg. And Gill is confident United will get their man.

"We know the keeper we want and are in a good position", Gill told BBC Radio 5, "and I’m sure we can get the deal done."

GIll also revealed that United have known the player they want for many months now and have been patiently working away behind the scenes to make sure the deal is done.

"We’ve made the decision of who we want, we’ve been associated with all the top goalkeepers in Europe over the past six months, but we’ve known who we wanted for many months and we aim to achieve that."
