Ajax pipped FC Twente to the Dutch Eredivisie title yesterday thanks to a last day win against their rivals and instantly turned their thoughts towards trying to keep the current squad together.

The Amsterdam side went into the contest a single point behind Twente and also with the knowledge that just a week earlier the same opponents had beaten then in the Dutch Cup final. The pressure therefore was well and truly on.

And a 3-1 victory at the Amsterdam ArenA proved more than enough to end a wait of seven years without a top flight title for the Dutch giants. But no sooner had celebrations begun than thoughts of holding onto the talents at the club surfaced.

"We must try to keep this group together", commented defender Toby Alderweireld before reflecting on the triumph.

"I am 22 years old and champions of the Netherlands. Fantastic! We could not lose today."

Ajax have a number of players that are expected to be in-demand in the summer, not least goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and defender Jan Vertonghen.
