Legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has slammed his old club Bayern Munich for shelling out more than €20M for Schalke shot-stopper Manuel Neuer.
While Kahn does not doubt the abilities of Neuer and considers him one of the best goalkeepers in the game, the ex-Germany star believes that to pay so much money for a player who will be a free agent in just a year’s time is astonishing.
"They will hire a very good goalkeeper, but to pay such a sum for a player who will be free in 2012 is exorbitant", Kahn told German daily Bild.
And the 41-year-old, who played for Bayern between 1994 and 2008, believes that the club need to get continuity in the long term through sticking with a coach, in the same way as Barcelona.
"Continuity in the coaching position is the basis for success. What I do not see now at Bayern is a philosophy of football. The example of Barcelona shows that we must think long term."
