Schalke ended their season on a high by beating 2.Bundesliga side Duisburg 5-0 in the German Cup final yesterday.

The Ruhr club had endured a miserable season in the Bundesliga, even battling relegation at one point. In cup competitions the story could not have been more different however, with a run to the semi-finals of the Champions League backed up by winning the German Cup.

"We played a very focused match and in the end it was a clear victory", said Schalke boss Ralf Rangnick.

"Obviously it’s very pleasing to end the season with a trophy. We are very proud of the team."

Schalke can now look forward to the 2011/12 season with relish and are expected to put in a much improved showing, with a Bundesliga title challenge a possibility if Rangnick can strengthen in the right areas over the summer.
