Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish does not believe the club’s absence from European competition next season will have an impact on which players the club can attract over the summer.
The Reds ended their season on a sour note by losing to Aston Villa (1-0), though the damage to their European ambitions had been done the previous weekend, with a home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. That meant Spurs were in the driving seat to qualify for the Europa League, something they confirmed with victory over Birmingham City.
And even though being out of Europe is a new experience for Liverpool, Dalglish believes the stature of the club will ensure it does not affect their ability to attract the best.
"There are a lot more players who don’t play in the Champions League than do", said Dalglish after the Villa game.
"I think Liverpool Football Club is a big enough attraction for players. If we want to bring somebody in, I am sure the club will be a huge attraction for them.
"Anybody that is going to come in is going to have to be a lot better than what we’ve got here – and that’s only a chosen few.
"We’ll be selective with what we want to do and if a player doesn’t want to come, it’s their loss, not ours."
