Brazilian international midfielder Gilberto Silva has ended his association with Greek giants Panathinaikos and headed home to see out his career.

The 34-year-old has agreed to sign for Gremio and is looking forward to settling back into domestic football in Brazil. Having headed abroad in 2002, to join English Premier League side Arsenal, Gilberto Silva has spent nine years in European football.

In 2008 the Brazilian defensive midfielder swapped London for Athens, moving from Arsenal to Panathinaikos. In Greece, he helped the Greens to reclaim the Super League title from bitter rivals Olympiacos, although that title slipped through their fingers this season.

Nevertheless, Gilberto Silva continues to be rated highly and his loss will surely be felt by Panathinaikos. For the player himself though, a move to Gremio looks the perfect place to play out the final years of his career.
