Reports from Spain suggest Manchester United may be approaching D-Day in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Red Devils are known to have made progress towards acquiring the man they want to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar, with Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg also thought to be on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar.

However, the name of De Gea has never gone away and the 20-year-old will be sold by Atletico Madrid this summer providing United offer an amount acceptable to the Spanish side.

According to Cadena Ser, Monday is the key day for De Gea’s potential move to Old Trafford, with United set to iron out the remaining details with Atletico and agree the final points of the deal.

The English champions are keen to ensure they quickly recruit Van der Sar’s successor so as to avoid a long drawn-out summer transfer saga as they seek to replace the Dutchman.

De Gea will cost Ferguson’s side around €20M, but this is considered value if the young Spaniard lives up to the undoubted potential he has shown at the Vicente Calderon.
